More precisely, IMHO, --prefix is where the files that aren't 
specified by other configure options are placed (i.e. if you 
don't override sysconfdir, then all the config dirs get placed 
beneath prefix).  It's a catch-all.  You guys don't seem to 
like it very much.  =)

Obviously, this is something that is up for interpretation.  -- justin
