The only problem I can recreate with my second patch (uncommitted) is
at offset n*8192+8187...  after looking at it briefly, it would seem
that the n*8192+8187 problem is the fault of find_start_sequence()
(i.e., unrelated to the code I've tweaked)

I'll commit the second patch now and try to make progress on
n*8192+8187 before I have to stop.
