As I posted earlier, man cancellation on Solaris 8 says:

     A mutex is explicitly  not a cancellation point  and  should
     be held for only the minimal essential time.

pthread_cancel wouldn't work.  And as Ryan pointed out, it is bad to try
and forcibly kill a thread.  -- justin
