OK, I take back the part about pointer in the conn_rec.  Jeff called me
and said that we have code down in the connection filters (I think) that
optimize the packet sizes in pipelining/keepalive multiple request

I don't know how frequently back-to-back response packets actually
occur, therefore I don't have a feel for how tight this code needs to
be, in terms of path length.
