This was my solution for apr's configure.in but I'm no expert (or even a
beginner really) on sed!

then
+        if test `uname -r | sed -e 's/\(.\)\.\(.\)\..*/\1\2/'` -le "41";
then

This worked for me on 4.1-STABLE...
