Isn't the long standing problem with doing that the 
fact that if the name really is totally bogus and 
the gethostbyname() search slips through /etc/hosts
that the server will go out to lunch on startup and 
could roll into a 5 minute timeout or something with no 
way to kill the gethostbyname() in progress?

I thought that's why the gethostbyname() was
being avoided DURING startup... cus some 
platforms will go out to lunch?
