In my particular case (porting the conf directory stuff) it's
not that bad, just expensive. To get to see if a file is
a directory but not a symlink, you gotta stat it twice,
once with apr_stat (to check to see if it's a DIR) and then
with apr_lstat (for it's symlinkness)...  :/
