That sounds a lot like the patch I posted last week, though my patch
did this for more than 500 errors.  It does pretty much what you say 
(though it doesn't cut out the chunk filter if it is present).  It is 
intended for non-redirected errors.  In the short term, this would be 
more than just 500.  In the long term (after somebody implements something 
like you describe above (or anything else that lets filters know that 
they can't use the config associated with the original URI)), this would 
be just for 500 errors.
