Subject new mailing list: scalable
Date Fri, 22 Sep 2000 00:30:43 GMT
hi, i'm promoting a new mailing list i've created:

scalable@arctic.org is intended to discuss techniques and technologies for
scaling internet services.

the advent of internet applications is leading us into new areas of scale,
and is driving an evolution of "server" technology.

new ASPs (application service providers) are appearing regularly, and many
of the hurdles of ASP acceptance are being knocked down.

the field is still young enough to be shrouded in marketing hoopla,
secrets, and wide-ranging promises which can obscure the good science and
engineering that is occuring in many places.

it is my hope that scalable@arctic.org will help provide signal amidst the
noise.

of specific value on this list are war stories regarding particular
technologies: server hardware; storage devices; layer-N switches/routers;
application servers; operating systems; language choices; architecture
plans, and analyses.

advocacy holy wars are not appreciated. choices of things such as
operating system are dictated on a case-by-case basis, there is no single
tool which solves all problems.

subscribe by sending a message to scalable-subscribe@arctic.org.
