BTW, keep in mind that with this construct, if "mktemp" does not exists,
you still get the (confusing) message "mktemp: not found" on the terminal -
alhough the fallback stuff works fine. Those program fallback things usually
need an extra sub-shell and an outer redirection of stderr to be quiet:

tmpfile=`(mktemp /tmp/sysv_makefile.XXXXXX) 2>/dev/null` || tmpfile="tmp.$$"
