Hmm, but we do arithmetic on the pointers as if it were character
data. I think using char* results in tidier code -- clean compiles
without the casts that Bill S. added and I threw away :-).

(Actually, char* doesn't necessarily imply text -- it can equally well
be any byte-wide data -- another reason why it is the right type to use.)
