It's interesting that buffering code is differing between platforms.

/me reintroduces his earlier suggestion...

If buffering were done as a seperate layer completely seperate from
APR files (and IMO seperate from APR), then rather than sprinkling
each platform with its own buffer code, it could be kept as common
code.

But, you might say, it's a pain to have seperate calls for buffering
vs. non-buffering I/O. This can be solved by moving IOLs into APR.
