Neither is perfect, but I'll +1 for Jeff's -- it is an improvement.

I've got the same concerns about Ryan's, so I'd say -1 for that patch.

  We are STILL in a much better position w.r.t. config than we were.
  Despite some of the recent issues with config processing, people should
  not be discouraged. I think there is probably another pass that needs to
  be made over all the config stuff, but we're doing very well right now!
