Or on taz:

  % ls -l /export/home/cvs
  drw-rw-r--  12 cvs  cvsadmin  1024 Jan  2 21:44 /export/home/cvs

which gives you:
    cvs server: cannot open /export/home/cvs/CVSROOT/config: Permission denied
    Cannot access /export/home/cvs/CVSROOT
    Permission denied
when you try a "cvs update"
