AFAIK, it's simply because for mass vhosts, the Host: header does *not*
match the virtualhost's ServerName.  At the end of the request_rec's
lifetime, the name mass virtual host that was accessed goes away.  It's
really only one apache vhost config record for MANY logical vhosts. 
That's why I couldn't think of any other way around this than to revert
to storing the hostname.  <shrug>
