    As mentioned earlier, I have started to work on improving the
    current automake-based build environment.

    Current Changes:

    - shared modules can be built in the tree
    - added support for --with-layout, uses APACI config.layout
    -   working 'make install'
    -   working 'make depend'
    -   working Pthreads checks
    -   buildconf replaced

    Current TODO:

    - shared modules can be built outside the tree

    A simple test[1] ran successfully on:

    -   FreeBSD 2.2.8, 3.4, 4-current (gcc, /usr/bin/make)
    - SunOS 4.1.4 (gcc, GNU make)
    -   Solaris 7 (gcc/WorkShop C, /usr/ccs/bin/make)
    -   Linux/Alpha (gcc/Compaq C, GNU make)

    You can download the current tarball at:

        http://apache.org/~sascha/

    Your feedback is welcome.

    [1] Executing the following script:

      #! /bin/sh
      ./configure \
            --enable-speling=shared \
            --prefix=/tmp/apache \
            || exit 1
      ${MAKE:-make} depend install

--

          Regards,

                            Sascha Schumann
