I'm amazed that this works on MPE/iX.  It's so syntactically close to the
original failing code that I was sure it would fail too.

This also works on MPE/iX and would be my preferred solution.  (Note that
you meant to say CPP="$TCPP"  -- the quotes are
required because TCPP may be more than one word on MPE/iX).
