Yeah, but the result is cached the first time, so it shouldn't be a
big deal. It was a judgement call; I figure that one or two
repetitions of a function check isn't a big deal because of the
caching. If it is needed all over the place, it gets pushed to the
top-level configure.in. Sound good?
