hrm.

are you saying that you'd like the api to be able to indicate some number
of bytes have been transferred in addition to an error?  because even
though i never stated it explicitly in the docs, i was defining this stuff
to be more like unix i/o -- where you can have an error condition, or
bytes transferred, but not both.

(BUFF is written assuming the unix i/o style...)
