Yes, MD5 as a hash table lookup function performs not as good as it should.
For hash table lookups one either should use the weaker MD4 (where its
weaknesses are not important but its better speed is interesting) or use one
of the hash functions dedicated to hash table lookups (instead of cryptography
purposes). These are usually faster by a factor of 2.
