Guess so: on most modern Unices, iol_socket will do (it uses select()
for timeout). Older ones will require a socketpair instead of a pipe,
and then iol_socket will still do.

Dunno, but if you are planning to make mod_cgi work, then please say so,
and I'll do something else.
