It is a shame there are so few alternatives; I am not that hot at all when
it comes to Expat, though agree that there is not much which matches it.

We use it in http://pen.jrc.it, as a atamodel configuration and management
tool, rather than for document, and had to content with many a core dump,
string length overruns; and had our grubby fingers all over the code to
increase #defines, place senteniels and so on.

The next question is; do we need as _much_ as Expat. If one simply
talks about doing simple XML hierachical structs, and a bit of
validation on the side ? 

I have not seen a full blown requirement floating on this list.

Though on the other hand, by the time you merge the WebDav Rq's and want
to do a little RDF and provide a little stylesheets support you propably
end up with about 95% of the expat features anyway.

Hmm, I am not saying much, am I.
