I wonder.  If a user has the thing installed on his
machine and he goes and gets a fresh version, as we
surely want him to do, the default install should
"do the right thing" and I'd argue that's to install
in the way the what he has already installed.

Possibly some warning that what is already installed
has an unusal layout - I can't see how that would
work exactly.

That both redhat and apple are doing this kind of
variant layout - well I think we should try to
meet them more than half way so the end users upgrades
are as easy as possible.

The implementation might be a kludge, but the goal
seems entirely admirable.
