Given that this is used at *installation* time, couldn't you just use a
utility program written in C that returns the result of
getuid/geteuid/getgid/getegid()? Just make sure that this is built before
"make install" and you're all set.

I realize that's a departure from the current model, but most (all?) of the
other helpers must be shell scripts because they're used at *configuration*
time (before we even know how to compile C code).
