Anyone confirm either way?

initgroups() man page on dgux says it returns 1 for failure, but that
makes no sense.

Is a PR on it...

A little test program on a 4.0B DUX system suggests that's a typo:
initgroups(jdavis,-1) returns -1, (as does running the test program
without being root), while initgroups(jdavis,valid_group) returns 0.
The manpage on that system does say it returns 1 on error.
