Yes, surprize, you are right, we actually now use a lock file; I forgot
about that. 

Hmm, but not /var/tmp/x, that is quite true. And that partition is
isolated disk/nfs wise. 

Hmm, the other OSF's machine uses 1.2.1, and there is no lock file there. 
Now why was that changed. ?
