Around the Net

IBM adopts Apache as preferred Ecommerce Server

IBM showed that it can spot a bandwaggon as well as the next man by
[1]announcing that it would ship Apache as part of its WebSphere
product range, provide commercial support for Apache, and make
contributions towards the development of the Apache server. IBM and
Lotus servers had previously made only a small impact on the encrypted
internet transactions marketplace. One wonders if IBM may yet consider
Linux as an alternative to AIX, and, for example, sell
PowerPC/Linux/Apache solutions to hosting companies and ISP's in
   competition with Microsoft-IIS & NT.

Thawte Root Certificate to expire shortly

SSL Sites using [2]Thawte server certificates may be at risk of
losing transactions after July 27th as the Thawte root certificate
referenced by the Explorer 3 and Netscape 3 browsers expires on this
date. Users of these browsers can replace the certificate by visiting
Thawte's site. Thawte point out that Explorer 3 users are unlikely to
be affected because Explorer 3 does not check for root certificate
expiry, but even so, there has been fear amongst the Thawte user
community that they may lose revenue because of users inability to
connect to their site. On www.netcraft.com about 30% of the traffice
is from people using version 3 of Explorer or Netscape.
