For now. And poor Netscape. They give away their client in favor of server development and still can't even hold their own in web servers. Yea, the numbers don't mean much in terms of $$$ and they have a heck of a lot of stuff other than web servers, but... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 13:05:12 +0100 (BST) From: Mike Prettejohn To: marcs@znep.com Subject: June 1998 Netcraft Web Server Survey The June 1998 Netcraft Web Server Survey is out; - Top placed developers with numbers of hosts responding and percentage share - Developer Jun 98 Percent Change Apache 1182142 49.05 0.79 Microsoft 538343 22.34 0.58 Netscape 211474 8.77 -0.56 NCSA 64310 2.67 -0.21 O'Reilly 56465 2.34 -0.12 - Top placed servers with numbers of hosts responding and percentage share - Server Jun 98 Percent Change Apache 1182142 49.05 0.79 Microsoft-IIS 529267 21.96 0.62 Netscape-Enterprise 121321 5.03 -0.16 NCSA 64310 2.67 -0.21 WebSitePro 50436 2.09 -0.08 thttpd 48355 2.01 -0.13 Rapidsite 46297 1.92 1.77 Stronghold 42795 1.78 -0.13 Netscape-Commerce 38621 1.60 -0.18 WebSTAR 33605 1.39 -0.17 Around the Net Verisign to issue certificates for Apache-SSL Verisign are now [1]issuing certificates to people using Apache-SSL, ending a longstanding standoff between Verisign and Ben Laurie. Previsouly, Verisign would not issue certificates for the freely available Apache-SSL server, because commercial server vendors paid Verisign to inspect their products, and Verisign considered that issuing server certificates in respect of Apache-SSL would be inconsistent with this. However, Apache-SSL has become widely used, and certificates for Apache-SSL have been readily available from [2]Thawte, and so Verisign's change of view is quite pragmatic. RedHat to sell SSL Server Redhat [3]announced that they are now selling an SSL server. This [4]appears to be Apache-SSL with an RSA licence. This will likely increase the representation of Apache-SSL in the US, where use of the server without a licence would likely infringe RSA's patents. Both of these moves are likely to increase the use of Apache in internet electronic commerce and other applications requiring encrypted transactions.
