I'm not averse to sticking this in some existing pool, although over time
a lot of restarts would consume memory progressively.  Sub-pools have the
same overhead as NULL-parented ones, do they not?

Declare a cleanup?  To be triggered when or by what action?  Pool
destruction, I presume - but what pool?
