That's not what you said. You said: "And C++ doesn't help it." Resorting
to "it's too much typing" is sad.

True, which is why you shouldn't do it. My point was, and is, that C++
has safe(r) casts. And that _is_ the point.

BTW, even g++ 2.7.x allowed a static_cast, though it didn't generate an
appropriate error on this test case.
