Subject length types

Here's a question: I've been going over the Apache API, writing up a
definitive account of my ideas for Apache 2.0. I noticed that, for the
most part, we use the type long when referring to "big" numbers, e.g. file
lengths. Does anyone have an opinion on whether we should make an effort
to use size_t, ssize_t, off_t, etc... instead, in the API functions?
