There is no reason to force cc for IRIX.  5.3 I could build just fine
under gcc, same with 6.2.  If you try to use a 5.3 gcc on a 6.2 system you
can run into conflicts with the way the iovec structure is declared, but
that is another issue.

On nearly every platform in the world, if gcc doesn't work right to
compile it then it is installed incorrectly or is a reaaaaaaaaaly old
version.
