AFAIK all versions of gcc in disguise respond properly to -v
this is on NetBSD which uses gcc in disguise as cc.

It seems to me that setting -O2 by default if CC responds
as being gcc is a reasonable soloution.

the: {6} % cc -v
gcc version 2.4.5

-bill
