The irc/chat client world doesn't have any widely accepted standards
for out of band processing of files, file uploads, ipc, rpc or anything
else, people can't even agree how to handle telnet negotiation
sequences.  People *are* working towards chat-clients with guns (xerox
jupiter, caltec astrovr and supernova, placeware's auditorium and the
like, all featuring x-platform gui (java/tk) whiteboards, audio, mbone
video, yadda, yadda).

There's a lot of good intentions out there, but not a great deal of
organisation.  Next year will be crazy though ;)
