I don't think it is neccessary to make the copy and test it.
I'm sure the patch is correct because FreeBSD uses a similar one.
And even if it is not correct we can back it out immediately.
Its just one line and it only affects the resulting mail.
I does no other harm.

Root priviledge is not needed, I think. Everyone who is 
in the Unix group "cvsadmin" can do this. So, just check log_accum.pl
out Marc and patch it yourself. This should work.
