    In many cases I agree.  In treating pointer values as Boolean,
    though, I don't.  Consider also the following:

    char *zed;
      [3 pages of stuff]
    if (!zed) {
        f_of_x (x, ++zed);

    If you've lost track of how zed was defined, this is unrevealing.
    If the condition were "if (zed != NULL)" I think it is much, much
    clearer what is going on - and it's all one to the compiler.
