They made a plea at their press conference to start using an alternate
server (mpfwww.jpl.nasa.gov).

telnet mpfwww.jpl.nasa.gov 80
Trying 137.78.99.19...
Connected to mpfwww.jpl.nasa.gov.
Escape character is '^]'.
HEAD / HTTP/1.0

HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Server: Netscape-Enterprise/2.01
Date: Sun, 06 Jul 1997 03:52:07 GMT
Accept-ranges: bytes
Last-modified: Sun, 06 Jul 1997 03:26:52 GMT
Content-length: 11389
Content-type: text/html

 Connection closed by foreign host.

They said it was something SGI had setup for them.

Was funny, they began talking about how many hits their site had taken
and I half expected them to say "They'd been in contact with the
Apache Group" to tune their server. *grin*
