Apparently to do end-to-end OC-12 speeds requires buffers on the order of
780k on each end.  As of a year ago I believe only IRIX allowed buffers as
large as 512k (just large enough for HIPPI I think), solaris didn't. 
Don't know what the current state of affairs is.
