And (flame me!) try -DNO_LINGCLOSE if upgrading to 1.2b8 (or preferably
1.2b9-dev)  doesn't even things up. 

But actually my guess is that if you were to look at their config it looks
like this: 

StartServers 5
MinSpareServers 5
MaxSpareServers 10

rather than something reasonable for the load they're seeing.  This has
been my experience with other "benchmarks".  Maybe I should spend the
afternoon doing documentation...
