I wouldn't be surprised if some unix echo doesn't grok -n.  There's a
comment in some configure or Configure script like this: 

# can you believe it?? echo ' ' doesn't work on blargunix/1.0
echo="echo ' '"

Not that I'm saying it's a bad thing to use -n, I'm just saying don't be
surprised :)
