here's what happens during 'make'

	(cd modules; \
	make CC=gcc AUX_CFLAGS='-O2 -DHPUX10 ' RANLIB='ranlib')
	(cd ; make CC=gcc AUX_CFLAGS=' -O2 -DHPUX10 ' RANLIB='ranlib')
Make: No arguments or description file.  Stop.
*** Error exit code 1

Stop.
*** Error exit code 1

Stop.
