I don't see why we can't:

#ifdef NO_LINGCLOSE
        bclose(conn_io);        /* just close it */
#else
!	if (r->method == PUT)
	    lingering_close (conn_io->fd, r->server);
	else
!	    bclose (conn_io);
#endif
