The FIN_WAIT_2 problem making sure that we aren't revisiting the
dropped data problem via this fix. My memory of the whole reason
we introduced lingering_close() is fuzzy at best.

No hard facts. I'm confused as to why we were calling lingering_close()
for connections that did not exist. Could be that the connection reset
between child_main() and the call to lingering_close. I dunno. Could
be a lack of understanding period. I think your changes need to go
in and then we can see what is still happening.
