All this cleaning up may seem inocuous but I wouldn't do it close to a release. You never know where there's some unexpected side effect of some variable not being constant and while we really want to eliminate such nasties now is probably not the time to be doing it. Either we are about to release, in which case, freeze the tree and get the thing out, or we're not, in which case Roy can get on with cleaning up the code. My view is that we should freeze now, branch the repository, get all the oustanding code from personal projects in and start cleaning up from there.
