(note: only lynx is available on the server itself, and it works locally) .htaccess files were removed, no effect. Welcome.html was removed, no effect (the lynx session that worked before, got a directory listing, the netscape session that didn't work, still hung) diffs of the configfiles against the -dist ones were shown to a knowledgable apache admin, who did not see any flaws.
