Any plans for a gopher: proxy?

I sometimes get

<HEAD><TITLE>Bad Gateway</TITLE></HEAD>
<BODY><H1>Bad Gateway</H1>
The proxy server received an invalid
response from an upstream server.<P>
</BODY>

these sorts of failures on proxied FTP connections. These didn't
happen with the CERN server (which I replaced for other reasons
here). For example, this one came from
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/pictures/art/M.C.Escher/
Is Apache's proxy module stricter than others, or is this a case
of it being too sensitive?
