Hmmm ... lack of sympathy may apply about equally to both companies...

It's actually surprising how many people in the web community are
actually thinking of Micro$oft as "the good guys" these days, based
on their adoption of such community-developed standards as CSS (for
advanced HTML formatting) and PICS (for content labeling --- i.e.,
kid-safety).

The question is whether their current good behavior will extend into
the future, and into other areas of the technology. The signals are
mixed at best --- at any rate, this funny business, or their recent
attempt at a monopoly play in the travel industry (cutting a deal with
Northwest which essentially guarantees that anyone else who tries to
sell Northwest tickets over the internet gets an unsustainably low
commission), indicate that they haven't undergone any kind of
religious conversion.

(Also, FWIW, the "we will donate ActiveX to a standards body" thing is
ambiguous --- there's a lot of action in Europe directed at getting
ISO to standardize at least some of the various Windows APIs, and
Microsoft may well feel that a third-party body which they helped set
up would be better than the ISO tarpit. On the other hand, that *is*
a defensible position...).
