  However, the architecture makes it difficult it to limit to one thread without
  special coding, because, for example, DNS resolving runs in its own thread.

Actually, I've been thinking lately that the best way to finesse this might
be to support a "dummy" threads package which, for instance, implemented the
DNS stuff by directly calling the ordinary C get{host,addr}byname() routines
(and faking up a suitably small TTL value); it would save an awful lot of
ugly #ifdefs...
