I brought this up last week and was suddenly reminded of it again.

The problem is that using run_sub_req() causes a SEGV because
sub->main is not being initialized.

I am changing the way I am doing things by calling invoke_handler()
instead, however this brings up another nit. The prototype for
invoke_handler() is enclosed in #ifdef CORE_PRIVATE. I would seem
to me that this needs to be made available to external (non-core)
code as well.
