... which are, unfortunately, not supported on certain oddball
systems.  The solutions involving the scoreboard which Ben and I have
been discussing have the advantage that they can be made to work just
about anyplace, including lowest-common-denominator v7+sockets systems
which don't even have any useful shared memory (and on which the
scoreboard is kept in a file).

They also keep all subprocess management in one place --- coordinating
the activities of the child server processes is the *purpose* of the
scoreboard, after all, and it's good engineering to reuse the existing
machinery, rather than set up something new, if possible...
